Bruce York says he’s seen comments on Facebook from all over the world. WMTW News 8’s Jim Keithley reports.
Here is a transcript of the video. Apologies for the caps, but that is how the text version of this is presented.
EXPERTS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT — WAS IT A METEOR – OR SOMETHING ELSE? THIS AFTER A SOUTH PARIS MAN CAPTURED SOMETHING IN THE SKIES ABOVE OXFORD COUNTY A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. HE POSTED IT ON FACEBOOK – THE VIDEO HAS GONE VIRAL- W-M-T-W NEWS 8’S JIM KEITHLEY SHEDS SOME LIGHT ON WHAT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN. I just happened to catch something out of the corner of my eye.” BRUCE YORK SAYS HE WAS JUST DRIVING ALONG ROUTE 26 IN SOUTH PARIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON ABOUT FIVE O’CLOCK WHEN HE NOTICED WHAT LOOKED LIKE A FIREBALL IN THE SKY – HE GRABBED HIS MOBILE PHONE AND STARTED RECORDING. “It didn’t look like anything that I’ve ever seen before- it didn’t look like any footage I’ve ever seen of a meteorite or comet. It just struck me as odd.” HE CAPTURED VIDEO OF THE STRANGE HAPPENING FOR A LITTLE MORE THAN 2 AND A HALF MINUTES. HE POSTED IT TO FACEBOOK AND YOUTUBE – AND SO MANY PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED – IN TWO JUST DAYS, 16 THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE VIEWED IT FROM AS FAR AWAY AS SLOVAKIA, CALIFORNIA AND CANADA. OPINIONS AS TO WHAT IT IS – ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE. “People said it could be space junk. It could be a contrail from an airplane. It could be fuel dump, an airplane dumping fuel.” “I really don’t dare to wager one way or another what it is. i really don’t. I just, I’m hoping somebody will contact me and say okay – here’s what happened. Here’s what he caught on video.” AN ANSWER CAME LATE THIS AFTERNOON FROM EDWARD GLEASON – STAFF ASTONOMER AT THE “SOUTHWORTH PLANETARIUM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE.” GLEASON VIEWED THE CLIP AND SAID HE COULDN’T RULE OUT A METEOR – BUT SAID IF HE HAD TO GUESS – IT LOOKS LIKE “SPACE JUNK,” PIECES OF A SATTELITE BREAKING UP AND FALLING TO EARTH
I can’t say any more than anyone else what this is, but what I see, this picture is pretty obviously being taken with the sun very low on the horizon. That position does tend to illuminate low clouds from below and make them look bright orange or red (just as the sunset often appears orange and red) as if they were on fire. But, that does not speak to the origin of this admittedly odd cloud. As the object is not apparently moving, at least for the duration of the video, I cannot agree with the analysis of this being space junk, and anything that large would certainly have been in the news were it predicted to fall from orbit, especially if there were a chance of it doing so over a populated area. There seems to be no reason to call it a UFO, but then there is no particular reason not to either.
Let’s hear your thoughts.
