Police Say Seattle’s Fremont Troll Receiving Gruesome Animal Sacrifices

Greg Newkirk on Roadtrippers Feeding the Troll

The Fremont Troll has been a Seattle staple since it’s creation in 1990, so it’s no surprise that people have come to revere the big guy under the bridge. But after a collection of freshly-skinned animal heads were found in his presence, police are worried a mysterious group might actually worship the statue.

Police on a routine patrol down Troll Ave at 2:30AM last Friday were startled when they came upon a grisly scene – a collection of bloody animal skulls scattered throughout the vicinity of a home directly opposite the Troll.

Creepy.

Police Say Seattle's Fremont Troll Receiving Gruesome Animal Sacrifices

This is nothing more or less than a stupid act by some ignorant people.
Though Fremont, like many of Seattle’s surrounding communities, has a strong Scandinavian heritage, there is no mythology behind the Fremont troll, it is merely a public sculpture. This act is mindless vandalism, and cruelty to animals.

The Troll is a mixed media colossal statue, located on N. 36th Street at Troll Avenue N., under the north end of the George Washington Memorial Bridge (also known as the Aurora Bridge). It is clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle, as if it had just swiped it from the roadway above. The piece was the winner of a competition sponsored by the Fremont Arts Council in 1990, in part with the goal of rehabilitating the area under the bridge, which was becoming a dumping ground and haven for drug dealers. It was built later that same year. The idea of a troll living under a bridge is derived from the Scandinavian fairytale Three Billy Goats Gruff.
