From 1969 to 1971 there was a television series starring Christopher George called “The Immortal.”
In the pilot episode the main character, Ben Richards played by George, discovers that his blood contains some sort of universal immunity. He never gets sick, cannot be poisoned, heals every injury, and very possibly does not age (except to the point at which we meet him obviously.) This fact is discovered by a sickly millionaire who sets out to capture Richards for study and regular blood transfusions and so the stage is set for a “Fugitive,” “Incredible Hulk,” “Run Joe, Run” style hunt-them-down TV series.
Ray Kurzweil talks about digital immortality. Belgian drug maker, UCB is seeking a more practical sort.
According to The Telegraph UCB is now looking for their own Ben Richards.
Drug company launches global hunt for ‘superhumans’
A pharmaceutical company hopes that finding people with extraordinary characteristics could lead to new medicines
By Denise Roland 28 Jan 2014A drug maker has enlisted the help of the general public to track down people with extraordinary characteristics whose genetic make-up could form the basis of new medicines.
UCB, a Belgian pharmaceutical company, has launched a competition to find and describe individuals, families or communities who possess rare characteristics such as low sensitivity to pain or the ability to heal from injury quickly.
“For example, individuals or groups who exhibited exceptional wound healing after surgery or trauma might warrant further investigation. Equally, those who have consistently displayed exceptional resistance or immunity to infections, or who, after a robust clinical diagnosis, displayed unusually fast or spontaneous disease remission might be the basis for a winning submission,”
