Star Wars, Star Gate Or U.S. Missile ?

Astronomers were shocked when they captured some strange night time anomaly in the Hawaiian skies. A camera mounted on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea captured a huge “light bubble” as it begins far off in the horizon and seems to expand to a size that seems to be miles in length.

But according to Discover Magazine’s Bad Astronomy blog, this was just a U.S. missile:
“..Minuteman III ICBM [ballistics missile] had been scheduled to launch from Vandenburg Air Force Base, California, three minutes before the burst was observed..”

Of course that doesn’t stop the internet rumors that this was some type of star-gate portal opening up for alien space ships to travel to another dimension and so on and so on. Who’s to say! Ever since I read “Lies my teacher told me” I don’t trust anyone with authority. The other day, a cop tried to tell me that j-walking wasn’t a wise thing to do in downtown L.A., I looked at him like I was saying “Pffft! You ain’t the boss of me, man!” and continued crossing the busy street. Stupid cops…think they know everything.

On a serious note, the light bubble footage looks pretty cool. I can see how people’s imagination can run wild when they see such anomalies. I think Discovery buried this budding internet rumor.

“…Theories as the cause of the mysterious luminous sphere have ranged from the opening of an inter-dimensional portal to the future to a battle between two alien starships.

But the most likely explanation is that is shows a U.S. Minuteman III inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM), ejecting fuel as it enters the upper reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere.

The time-lapse footage shows the night horizon filled with stars, when suddenly an ethereal arc pops into view.

It rapidly expands, forming a circular shell which grows as it travels across the horizon, then fades as it fills the view.

According to Discover Magazine’s Bad Astronomy blog, the soap bubble-like characteristics of the light burst indicate that it has been caused by a ‘sudden impulse of energy and rapid expansion of material’.
