Syfy’s new show called “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files” debuted this week. The buzz around the web is that this will be a show that approaches the paranormal videos online and tries debunking them. Think of it like if “Mythbusters” mates with “Ghost Hunters”. No wait… “Mythbusters” combined with “Ghost Hunters”. Much better.
From Syfy’s website:
Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files revolutionizes paranormal programming by investigating the evidence witnesses post on the Internet every day. Have you ever seen a photo or video online and wondered, “Is this real?” This is the show that will answer that question.
Heading up the Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files team is Ben Hansen, a former FBI agent with a life-long fascination with the paranormal. Now, having left the agency, he leads a young team of intrepid investigators who will convene to dissect the latest unusual images and decide whether they merit further investigation. Grainy videos will be brought to life as the team conducts thorough and elaborate experiments in an attempt to recreate the phenomena, and Ben will make the final choice which cases will require a trip into the field.
Once an investigation is underway, the team will talk to witnesses, carry out experiments using the latest in high tech detection devices, collect physical samples, and determine whether a case should be debunked, or whether it’s a baffling paranormal mystery that might even put the team in danger. It’s all in a day’s work for the dogged investigators of Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files.
With all that said, I have to say that it’s one hell of a boring show. Seriously.
The concept sounds great and the show would have been a good idea except for the fact that 99.99999993% of the videos out there on the web are obviously annoying hoaxes. So in essence the FoF team reviews these annoying videos and manages to make them more annoying by theorizing what we already suspected from the beginning.
For example, the “Ghost Car” incident. That video has circulated the web for quite sometime now. The video is shot by the dashboard camera of a police cruiser. In the video we see the cop chasing this car which “mysteriously” goes right through a chain link fence. To most people, this was a clear case of the chain not being tied down and lifting up over the car when it forced its way through it. That’s it. Simple.
I guess the people over at Syfy decided that we needed a good half hour to explain this to us. Of course with the obligatory cliffhangers before each “moment of truth” scene followed by commercials of things we don’t need. I think complaining about the quality of the paranormal shows out there on TV land is like complaining about the sexist and misogynistic views on women in Spanish novelas.
I’ll let you guys be the judge. One thing is for sure, the FoF team is composed of some pretty good looking people. Mmmm..come to think of it, I might just watch it…..
By the way folks, I know things have been slow over at GhostTheory for the last few weeks – when I say slow I mean posting interviews, editorial articles and research articles – Yea. So sorry about that. I’ve been busy writing a book amongst other things. Don’t fret! I’m thinking to taking amphetamines to get me through. *Just kidding. Don’t call the cops*
Things have been crazy busy though. There a lot of good stories that I have in the back of my head that I’ve been meaning to work on. Some fictitious and fun ones some honestly well researched ones.
Just to keep you guys updated:
There was talk about shutting down one of my favorite sites: Cryptomundo from site owner Craig Woolheater. The monthly bills are adding up and Cryptomundo is not making enough from ad revenue and donations. So if you guys are feeling generous and like CM, head on over there and donate.
As GhostTheory grows, I see that bandwidth consumption is exponentially increasing. So I better plan this out before it gets too expensive and I’m in deep water. One thing is for sure, we are not flooding it with annoying ads. A sexy calendar of GhostTheory’s editors? Maybe.
Also, I was saddened to learn that Loren Coleman’s brother is having some major health issues. Jerry Coleman is in his final stages of cancer amongst other ailments. If you wish to send him a card, you can do so by mailing him at this address.
Godspeed.
