Georgia Bigfoot – What’s next?

With all the commotion going on about the possibility of a body of a sasquatch or “Bigfoot” found in Northern Georgia, we must ask ourselves what this will mean to the future of cryptozoology studies. What will this mean for the new creatures found? and why do people still keep saying that this is the missing link? like if there was one missing species that undoubtedly would bridge humans with primates.

Although I myself am very excited with the Georgian Bigfoot announcement, I am also weary and reminded that we’ve all been here before. The infamous Johor hominid Denver Alien case. Although this time, the presenters are more inclined in sharing some of the proof with the rest of the world. No matter what, we must always remain skeptical when presented with evidence of this magnitude. Why? well I guess for the sake of science. We can’t just all jump the gun when a group of people shout “We got him, we got Bigfoot” and release a few pictures of a possible unidentified primate looking carcass.
Playing Devil’s advocate here, let’s just say that this is the real deal. Bigfoot was actually found. Then what? What will this mean to Cryptozoology? As of right now, not many people or governments consider this a real science. They say that since the majority of the creatures studied have never been caught, or even yet, ever had existed, why would this study be considered legit? (I say the majority since Cryptozoology is known as the study of “hidden animals” and we’ve captured a Thylacine in the past.)
Will this mean that governmental funding will be finally possible to the countless Cryptozoologists out there? Will it now be accepted by mainstream science and will I be seeing a degree in Cryptozoological studies in the nearby college?

What about the future of the new species found? Say that this is all real. That Bigfoot exists and we know where there is more. How will the government handle this? will it step in and right away place this new species under their protective shield? Or will they not do anything about it and allow citizens to hunt for more of these creatures for further proof? I think the most logical thing they can do is step in and protect these creatures. Something that all of us in the paranormal field have always hoped for: Finding an undiscovered creature and having governmental forces step in and protect it from hunters and idiots. What about the fact that these creatures managed to elude captivity for thousands of years. Will we now go all out and sweep the nation’s forests to drive out the remaining creatures and study them? Science would love it, but is it ethical?

And what are we to say about the zealots out there that think that this is “the missing link”? That this find might make a dent in the Church (Christian/Catholic mainly) and send most religious people into a frenzy. Making them think that the missing link finally connects humans to primates. Zealots that say that “it’s going to shake their foundations” in their religion. Let’s take a moment to think about this.

Finding a body of an unknown primate (or creature) does not mean that it is the so called “missing link”. In fact, the whole notion of there be a missing link is quite preposterous. Why? well because evolutional studies show that humans are not the “next step” from primates. We are a distinct mutation of the primate branch. Evolution is about mutation and survival of the fittest. This “next step” thinking makes room for people to say that since there is a missing step, there has to be a missing link. Many make these arguments and claim that the creature known as Bigfoot or Sasquatch in the pacific northwest of the United States, is the missing link between humans and primates. Since Bigfoot is erroneously thought of as a cross between human and primates. Some people even go as far as claiming that Extra terrestrial beings are the missing link.

There is no reason why someone who is a devout Christian/Catholic should feel this way. This has nothing to do with their religion. This find will not prove or disprove any religious believes. Finding an undiscovered creature has nothing to do with one’s religious perception of life. It shouldn’t. I mean, there are countless new animals discovered in almost a daily basis and no one bothers to question their religion, so why is this the exception? the missing link does not exist. If this creature or find proves to be the real thing, then we should not use words like “missing link” but we should be more open in studying evolutionary biology and mutation.
